A pseudovariety is a class of finite algebras of a given finitary type which is closed under the formation of homomorphic images, subalgebras and finite direct products. This paper provides a systematic approach to various characterisations of pseudovarieties. This yields a corresponding alternative description of the lattice of pseudovarieties contained in a given pseudovariety. Finally a partial solution is given to the problem of determining a complete set of deduction rules for pseudoidentities.
