The authors define a cohomological Conley index of a time-discrete semidynamical system on a metric space, prove the homotopy invariance and additivity properties of the index and compute the Conley index of zero for a linear hyperbolic map on a Banach space. The second author's book ``The homotopy index and partial differential equations'' (1987; Zbl 0628.58006) is used.
