The authors point out that the new discrete ordinate method (for solving the linear integro-differential equations of kinetic theory) is a special case of the method of weighted residuals. Explicit expressions for the general representation of the derivative operator are given. In addition, the nodes of the mesh need not be roots of an orthogonal polynomial set and can be chosen according to some other criteria. Numerical results are included.
