Let K be an algebraic number field which is a normal extension of \({\mathbb{Q}}\). Let \(\hat K\) denote the maximal central extension of K/\({\mathbb{Q}}\) which is unramified over \({\mathbb{Q}}\) in the narrow sense. If K/\({\mathbb{Q}}\) is an elementary abelian extension of degree \(\ell^ n\) with \(n\geq 2\), the author gives a necessary and sufficient condition for \(\hat K\) to be the composite field of \(\hat k\) for all bicyclic subfields k of K. In particular, if \(n=3\) or if every ramified prime of K has degree 1 over \({\mathbb{Q}}\) then the condition is satisfied. In the second part of the paper \(\hat K\) is explicitly determined when \(\ell =2\).
