In a previous paper [Semigroup Forum 28, 341-346 (1984; Zbl 0524.20033)] the author used an equivalence relation \({\mathcal S}\), finer than Green's relation \({\mathcal J}\), to study minimal generating systems in certain monoids. In the present paper he continues this study, showing how the existence of minimal generating systems is linked to certain properties of the relation \({\mathcal S}\). In the first of his two main results he presents a sufficient condition, in terms of \({\mathcal S}\), for a \({\mathcal J}\)-trivial monoid to have a minimal generating system. In his other main result he show how, for monoids having no strictly \({\mathcal J}\)-increasing sequence of \({\mathcal J}\)-irreducible elements, the relation \({\mathcal S}\) enables minimality to be preserved in transferring from one generating system to another.
