There are considered suitable subsets of a topological group G, i.e., closed discrete subsets X of \(G\setminus \{1_ G\}\) such that every subgroup of G containing X is dense in G. One of the main theorems of the paper secures that every locally compact group contains a suitable subset. It is also proved that the inequalities \(s(G)\leq w(G)\leq s(G)^{\aleph_ 0}\) hold for every non-monothetic locally compact group G, where s(G) denotes the minimal cardinality of suitable subsets of G and w(G) is the weight of G.
