This paper is part of a series [J. Oper. Theory 22, No.1, 109-155 (1989; Zbl 0697.46022) and Integral Equations Oper. Theory 12, 343-382 (1989; Zbl 0676.46043)] where an axiomatic scheme for dealing with extension problems was developed under the name ``the band method''. The main result is a general maximum entropy principle which identifies the band extension as the unique positive extension for which the multiplicative diagonal is maximal. The method developed in this series seems to be powerful and to admit lots of applications, some of which are treated in this paper.
