This paper is devoted to the numerical analysis of spectral methods, for the one- and two-dimensional case of differential equations with non- constant coefficients. The authors derive error estimates and analyze in which cases overintegration may improve the accuracy of the approximation to allow for optimal results. The statements are confirmed by numerical experiments. The case where non-constant coefficients are induced by the treatment of a deformed geometry is also analyzed. The authors prove that in this situation the overintegration is unnecessary to provide the optimality of the approximation.
