    Die Robinson-Trautman-Metrik beschreibt Raum-Zeiten, die eine hyperflächenorthogonale, scherungsfreie Kongruenz von Nullgeodäten enthalten; sie ist im wesentlichen bestimmt durch eine Funktion \(f(u,x^ a)\), wo \(u\) eine Art von retardierter Zeit bedeutet und die \(x^ a\) \((a=1,2)\) lokale Koordinaten auf einer zweidimensionalen Riemannschen Mannigfaltigkeit \({}^ 2M\) mit gegebener Metrik \(g'_{ab}\) sind. \(f\) gehorcht der quasilinearen, parabolischen Differentialgleichung erster Ordnung (Robinson-Trautman-Gleichung) \(\partial f/\partial u=\Delta R/2\), wo \(R\) der Krümmungsskalar und \(\Delta\) der Laplace-Operator zur Metrik \(g_{ab}=e^{2f}g'_{ab}\) sind. Verf. beweist, daß diese Gleichung für alle kompakten, orientierbaren \({}^ 2M\) und bei genügend glatten Anfangsbedingungen \(f(0,x^ a)\) Lösungen für alle \(u>0\) besitzt, die zudem asymptotisch exponentiell gegen Metriken \(g'_{ab}\) mit konstanter Krümmung konvergieren.
