The paper under review gives a new approach to the theory of blocks with cyclic defect groups. Its main tool is the Auslander-Reiten quiver. This is first determined for the Brauer correspondent in the normalizer of the socle of the defect group. A theorem by Kawata then implies that in general it is a tube of type \(A_ n\) for some n. It is then shown that the width of the tube coincides with the number e of simple modules. An argument using the Cartan matrix shows that \(n+1\) is the order of the defect group and that e divides p-1 where p is the relevant characteristic. Several other known facts can be derived in this way.
