Let M be a complete, noncompact n-dimensional hypersurface with constant mean curvature (nonzero) properly immersed in a noncompact manifold N with bounded geometry and nonnegative Ricci curvature. Theorem. If M is stable with respect to volume preserving deformations (or, more generally if M has finite index), then the volume of M must grow faster than (distance in \(N)^ n\). The proof relies on a volume estimate based on the monotonicity inequality, generalizing earlier observations of Alexander, Hoffman \& Osserman in the case \(N={\mathbb{R}}^{n+1}\).
