A general descent framework for equilibrium problems whose cost bifunctions are differentiable but nonstrictly monotone is proposed. This framework is based on combining descent and regularization techniques which extends the approach of \textit{I. V. Konnov, S. Kum} and \textit{G. M. Lee} [Math. Methods Oper. Res. 55, No. 3, 371--382 (2002; Zbl 1031.90052)] for variational inequality problems. A class of gap functions which take into account the behaviour of perturbed bifunctions is considered. The convergence results for the desecnt methods are also provided.
