    The author shows that surprisingly a Meir-Keeler type fixed point theorem of \textit{J. Jachymski} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 194, No.~1, 293--303 (1995; Zbl 0834.54025)] is equivalent to a similar fixed point theorem independently obtained by \textit{L. B. Ciric} [Publ. Inst. Math., Nouv. S. 30(44), 25--27 (1981; Zbl 0493.54028)] and \textit{J. Matkowski} (cf. Theorem 1.5.1 from [\textit{M. Kuczma, B. Choczewski} and \textit{R. Ger}, Iterative functional equations. Encyclopedia of Mathematics and Its Applications, 32. (Cambridge) etc.: Cambridge University Press. xiv, (1990; Zbl 0703.39005)]). Further, he shows that a continuous and asymptotically regular self-mapping \(T\) of a complete metric space \((X, d)\) has a (contractive) fixed point provided that: (i) there exists a \(\phi\in\Phi_1\) such that \(d(Tx, Ty) \leq\phi(D(x, y))\) for all \(x, y \in X;\) (ii) \(d(Tx, Ty) < D(x, y)\) for all \(x, y \in X\) with \(x \not= y\); where \(\Phi_1\) is the collection of some gauge functions and \[ D(x, y) = d(x, y) + \gamma[d(x, Tx) + d(y, Ty)], \gamma \geq 0. \] Some special cases are discussed.
