This very interesting paper studies the problem of the distrubtion of elements in a finite classical group with a given property (e.g., being irreducible, cyclic, separable, etc.). If one fixes the dimension of the group and lets the field size grow, then one can use methods of algebraic groups to study this problems (by considering the varieties determined by the properties). However, if one fixes the field size and lets the dimension grow, these methods do not apply. The authors get very detailed results for many very interesting cases. The results are too detailed to describe here and we refer the reader to the paper. The results here should have a myriad of applications. The methods used will also apply in many other similar situations.
