\textit{J. Bezerra, A. Garcia} and \textit{H. Stichtenoth} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 589, 159--199 (2005; Zbl 1159.11046)] gave an explicit tower of function fields \(\mathcal F_{i}\) over \(\mathbb F_{q^{3}}\) for each prime power \(q\), which they showed has limit of \(N(\mathcal F_{i})/g(\mathcal F_{i})\) at least as large as the substitution of \(q\) for \(p\) in the Zink bound. (Here, \(N(\mathcal F)\) and \(g(\mathcal F)\) denote the number of rational places and genus of the function field \(\mathcal F\), respectively.) Here, the calculation verifying this is simplified by a more structural approach. This succeeds in particular due to the application of a modification of the key lemma of \textit{A. Garcia} and \textit{H. Stichtenoth} [Mosc. Math. J. 5, 767--774 (2005)]: the hypotheses are weakened to so to apply to the present setting, of non-Galois \(\mathcal F_{i+1}/\mathcal F_{i}\).
