The authors find a matrix hierarchy whose bi-Hamiltonian reduction is the Camassa-Holm hierarchy. In an earlier paper [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2004, No. 75, 4019--4029 (2004; Zbl 1080.35123)], \textit{P. Lorenzoni} and \textit{M. Pedroni} have shown that a suitably chosen bi-Hamiltonian structure on the loop space \(C^\infty(S^1, \mathfrak{sl}_2)\) yields the bi-Hamiltonian structure of the Camassa-Holm equation under an appropriate bi-Hamiltonian reduction. Now the result is extended to hierarchies. Thereby a three-component extension of the Camassa-Holm hierarchy is obtained.
