Geometric numerical integration methods have proven to be a very valuable tool in the numerical solution of differential equations because they preserve certain geometric invariants of the exact solution. In the paper under review, this idea is extended from geometric to algebraic invariants. The basic elements of the corresponding theory are developed and some examples are given.
