The authors study scaling equations of the type \[ \phi(x) = \sum_{k} p_k^+\phi(mx-k) + \sum_{k} p_k^-\phi(k-mx)~. \] Equations of this type, in particular with \(p_k^- \equiv 0\), have been extensively studied; mostly because they serve as starting point for the construction of orthonormal wavelet bases. The inclusion of the reflection operator into the equation is intended to endow the associated multiwavelet basis with additional symmetry properties, which ordinary orthonormal wavelet bases do not have. The authors give criteria when a scaling equation has a compactly supported distributional solution, and study the resulting support intervals. In the final sections, they present concrete examples.
