The aim of the present note is to study necessary and sufficient conditions for a collection of splits of a given finite set \(X\) to give rise to a linearly independent collection of split metrics. This is under a general procedure in the mathematics of phylogenetic analysis, where to any collection of weighted splits it is associated the metric given by the corresponding linear combination of split metrics. In addition, there is a study of collections of splits called \textit{affine split systems}, induced by configurations of lines and points in the plane.
