The authors adress the existence and the uniqueness of strong solutions for the primitive equations of the ocean \[ {\partial u_k\over\partial t}-\nu\Delta u_k+ \sum^4_{j=1} \partial_j(u_j u_k)+ \partial_k p= f_k,\quad k= 1,2\tag{1} \] with the divergence free condition \(\sum^3_{k=1} \partial_k u_k= 0\). The equations are derived from the 3D Navier-Stokes system under the hydrostatic approximation assumption. They obtain the global existence of strong solutions for (1) in space dimension 3.
