    On a nilpotent Lie group \(G\) averaging operators \({\mathcal A}_r\) are considered which are arithmetic means stemming from a discrete co-compact subgroup \(\Gamma\) of \(G\) and a family of subsets of \(\Gamma\). The theorem states that \(\sup_{r>0}\mathcal A_r\) is a bounded operator on \(\ell^2(\Gamma)\), i.e. \[ \| \sup_{r>0}| \mathcal A_r(f)| \| _{\ell^2(\Gamma)}\leq A\| f\| _{\ell^2(\Gamma)}. \] The theorem and the proof are motivated by \textit{J. Bourgain}'s results for the Abelian case [Isr. J. Math. 61, No. 1, 39--72 (1988; Zbl 0642.28010); ibid. 73--84 (1988; Zbl 0642.28011)].
