    The paper deals with nonlinear parabolic boundary value problems using a so-called sentinel method, developed by \textit{J. L. Lions} [On some hyperbolic equations with a pressure term, Harlow: Longman Scientific\,\&\, Technical. Pitman Res. Notes Math. Ser. 269, 196--208 (1992; Zbl 0819.35089)]. The aim is to determine an unknown source term in the equation via an optimization problem. For the numerical solution of the problem a pseudo-spectral method is utilized, which is based on a Chebyshev collocation approach. The convergence of the method is analyzed and numerical experiments in one space dimension with a given exact solution illustrate its properties.
