Let \(G\) be a split reductive group over a field \(F\) which is a finite extension of a \(p\)-adic field, \(B\) a Borel subgroup, and \(T\) a maximal torus in \(B\), all assumed defined over the integers of \(F\). Let \(P=MN\) be a parabolic subgroup containing \(B\) where \(M\) is the Levi subgroup containing \(T\), and let \(X=X_*(T)\) be the cocharacters of \(T\). For each \(B\), suppose an \(x_B \in X\) is selected such that for adjacent \(B, B^\prime\) \(x_B-x_{B^\prime}\) is an integral multiple if the unique coroot positive for \(B\) and negative for \(B^\prime\); this is called a\((G,T)\)-orthogonal set. Let \(X_M\) be the quotient of \(X\) by the coroot lattice for \(M\). A \((G,M)\)-orthogonal set in \(X_M\) is defined similarly: an element \(x_P\) is given for every parabolic subgroup having \(M\) as a Levi factor, and for every two adjacent set of parabolic subgroups \(P, P^\prime\), the corresponding elements differ by an integral multiple of a designated element of \(X_M\) which depends on \(P\) and \(P^\prime\). The author proves that, for certain orthogonal sets, the projection (associated to \(M\)) of the intersection of \(X\) and the convex hull of \(x_B\) coincides with the intersection of the convex hull of \(x_P\) and the projection of \(X\), in the cases \(G=G_2\) and \(G=GL_n\). For any \(G\), the author considers a toric variety \(V_G\), whose fan is the real span of the cocharacters of the complex dual torus of \(T\) modulo the center of the complex dual group of \(G\), and whose torus is that quotient. The author constructs certain bundles on \(V_G\), and in the case \(G=G_2\) and \(G=GL_n\), proves their first cohomology is trivial. Furthermore, it is shown that these vanishing results are equivalent to the projection results previously mentioned.
