Mass transport and variants of the logarithmic Sobolev inequality (Q950687): Difference between revisions

This rich and impressive article handles classical functional inequalities and variants of them, on \(\mathbb{R}^d\) and on Riemannian manifolds, too. Most results apply to measures with tail behaviour of order \(e^{-|x|^\alpha}\) with \(1< \alpha\leq 2\). A leading idea is to balance a lack of convexity of the potential of a measure by a stronger integrability condition. Previous results by \textit{S.\,G.\thinspace Bobkov} [Ann.\ Probab.\ 27, No.\,4, 1903--1921 (1999; Zbl 0964.60013)] and by \textit{F.--Y.\thinspace Wang} [Probab.\ Theory Relat.\ Fields 109, 417--424 (1997; Zbl 0887.35012); J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 170, 219--245 (2000; Zbl 0946.58010)] are recovered and extended, by new methods. The following main items are addressed: -- New sufficient conditions are given, which entail variants of log-Sobolev inequalities; -- \(F\)-Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities are obtained by developing the mass transportation approach; -- a new general tightening method and a result are given, which derive a modified \(F\)-Sobolev inequality (which is an equality for constants) from a defective one and from a Poincaré inequality; -- new variants of the log-Sobolev inequality are shown to imply \(F\)-Sobolev and modifed log-Sobolev inequalities.
