The authors study parallel complex submanifolds of the complex projective space. The main aim of the paper is to simplify the classical classification proof of \textit{H. Nakagawa} and \textit{R. Takagi} [J. Math. Soc. Japan 28, 638--667 (1976; Zbl 0328.53009)] using the normal holonomy group. Such an approach was first developed by \textit{C. Olmos} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 110, No.~3, 813--818 (1990; Zbl 0708.53023)]. First they show that if the product of two Kähler manifolds admit a complex Kähler immersion with parallel second fundamental form in complex projective space, then both Kähler manifolds are locally isometric to the complex projective space. This result allows the authors to restrict their attention to parallel embeddings of irreducible symmetric spaces. The actual proof of the classification is divided into 3 parts. First it is shown that a canonical embedding of an Hermitian symmetric space (besides the Veronese embedding) can only have parallel second fundamental form if it is the first canonical embedding. Next it is shown that the rank of the symmetric space can not be greater then 2. This is done by a case by case analysis. The proof is then completed by arguing that in case the rank is 2, the first canonical embedding has indeed parallel second fundamental form. This last part can be proved in many different ways. The authors also include a conjecture that if the normal holonomy group of a complete full complex submanifold is not the full holonomy group, then \(M\) has parallel second fundamental form.
