Let \((X,L)\) be a polarized manifold, i.e., \(X\) is a smooth complex projective variety and \(L\) is an ample line bundle on \(X\). It is of interest to study the properties of the adjoint bundles \(K_X+tL\) (\(K_X\) stands for the canonical bundle of \(X\) and \(t\) is an integer) of \((X,L)\). In particular one would like to study the dimension of the adjoint linear systems \(|K_X+tL|\), say \(h^0(X,K_X+tL)\). As a consequence of some previous works by the author on this subject [Int. J. Math. 17, No. 7, 761--789 (2006; Zbl 1100.14003) and J. Pure Appl. Algebra 211, No. 3, 609--621 (2007; Zbl 1126.14009)], he has developed a systematic study of \(h^0(X,K_X+tL)\) by the introduction of invariants \(A_i(X,L)\) (\(1 \leq i \leq n\)) which are called the \textit{Hilbert coefficients} of \((X,L)\). These invariants are defined in Section 3 in the following way. First consider this definition: \(F_0(t):=h^0(X,K_X+tL)\) and \(F_i(t)=F_{i-1}(t+1)-F_{i-1}(t)\) (\(1 \leq i \leq n\)); and then define \(A_i(X,L)\) as \(F_{n-i}(1)\). The main equality provided in Section 3 is that \[ h^0(X,K_X+tL)=\sum_{j=0}^n {t-1 \choose n-j}A_j(X,L). \] Hence, bounds on the \(A_i(X,L)\)'s provide bounds on \(h^0(X,K_X+tL)\). In Section 4, positivity of the \(A_i\)'s is proven under the additional assumption on \(L\) to be globally generated. Under this additional hypothesis some bounds for \(h^0(X,K_X+tL)\) are provided. Last section (Section 5) contains some conjectures on the \(A_i(X,L)\)'s when \(L\) is just ample.
