This paper cnsiders convex Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on the unit ball of the cotangent bundle of the \(n\)-dimensional torus \(\mathbb{T}^n\) for \(n\geq 2\). The author restricts his attention to the set of \(H\) of Hamiltonians \(H\) of class at least \(C^2\) which are time-1 periodic. So \(H(q,p,t):B^*\mathbb{T}^n\times\mathbb{T}\to\mathbb{R}\), where \(B^*\mathbb{T}^n=\{(q,p) \in\mathbb{T}^n\times T_q^*\mathbb{T}^n:|-1|\leq 1\}\). The Hamiltonian flow generated by a Hamiltonian \(H\) is denoted by \(\varphi_H\), and \(\varphi^1_H\) denotes the time-1 map. The author considers the diffeomorphism group \({\mathcal D}=\{\varphi:\mathbb{B}^*\mathbb{T}^n\to B^* \mathbb{T}^n:\varphi=\varphi^1_H\) for some \(H\in{\mathcal H}\}\). His main result is an example of a convex Hamilton \(\varphi\) in \({\mathcal D}\) for which the asymptotic distance \(d_\infty\) (id,\(\varphi)=\lim_{n\to\infty} \frac 1nd(\text{id},\varphi^n)\) is strictly greater than Mather's minimal action. The latter is defined by \(\beta_H=\min_\mu\int Ld\mu\) where \(L\) is the Lagrangian associated (by means of the Legendre transformation) with the Hamiltonian \(H\), and wehre \(\mu\) ranges over all invariant Borel probability masures on \(T\mathbb{T}^n\times\mathbb{T}\).
