This paper studies the group of birational transformations of the plane that fix the point of a curve \(C\) in the plane; such group is called the inertia group \(Ine(C)\) of \(C\). Theorem 1 shows that if \(C\) is a smooth plane cubic curve then \(Ine(C)\) is generated by its elements of degree \(3\). By Theorem 2, if \(C\) has geometric genus 1 then any element of \(Ine(C)\) of finite order is conjugate, by a birational map, to an automorphism of a Del Pezzo surface, and a complete description of such automorphisms is given. Moreover, by Theorem 6, if \(C\) is a smooth cubic curve, then the group \(Ine(C)\) contains a free product \({\mathbb Z}/2{\mathbb Z}\) indexed by the points of the curve.
