Let \(C\) be the space of real continuous \(2\pi\)-periodic functions \(f\) with the uniform norm \(\| f\| =\max_{x\in \mathbb R}| f(x)| \), and let \(\mathbb T_n\), \(n\in \mathbb N\), be the space of trigonometric polynomials of order \(\leq n\). Let \(y_i:-\pi\leq y_{2s}<y_{2s-1}<\dots<y_1<\pi\) and \(y_i=y_{i+2s}+2\pi\) for other indices \(i\in \mathbb Z\). For \(Y:=\{y_i\}_{i\in \mathbb Z}\) denote by \(\Delta^{(0)}(Y)\) the set of all functions \(f\in C\) which are nonnegative on \([y_0,y_1]\), nonpositive on \([y_2,y_1]\), nonnegative on \([y_3,y_2]\) and so on. The main result is the following theorem. Theorem. If \(f\in\Delta^{(0)}(Y)\) then for each \(n\geq N(Y)\) there exists a polynomial \(P_n\in \mathbb T_n\) such that \(P_n\Delta^{(0)}(Y)\) and \(\| J-P_n\| \leq c (s)\omega_3\big(J,\frac \pi n\big)\), where \(N(Y)\) is a constant depending only on \(\min\{y_i-y_{i+1}\}\) and \(c(s)\) is a constant depending only on \(s\) \(i=1,\dots,2s \) (\(\omega_3(J,t)\) is the third modulus of smoothness of \(f\)).
