Let \(\mathbb{Z}_n(D,M)\) be the set of polynomials of degree \(n\) with integer coefficients and all zeros in the closed unit disc \(D\) whose leading coefficient \(a_n\) is bounded as \(|a_n| \leq M\). We write \(\mathbb{Z}_n^{1}(D,M)\) for the subset of \(\mathbb{Z}_n(D,M)\) with simple zeros. Suppose that \(S(P)\) is the arithmetic mean of the zeros of \(P.\) By an old result of Schur (1918), we have \(\limsup_{n\to \infty} |S(P_n)| \leq 1-\sqrt{e}/2\) for \(P_n \in \mathbb{Z}_n^{1}(D,M).\) The main result of the author implies that \(\lim_{n\to \infty} S(P_n) =0\) for \(P_n \in \mathbb{Z}_n^{1}(D,M).\) The same holds for \(P_n \in \mathbb{Z}_n(D,M)\) if every irreducible factor of \(P_n\) has multiplicity \(o(n)\) as \(n \to \infty\). More precisely, he shows that \(|S(P_n)| \leq 8 \sqrt{\frac{\log n}{n}}\) for each \(P_n \in \mathbb{Z}_n^{1}(D,M)\) and \(n \geq \max\{M, 55\}\). In the proofs the author uses some results on asymptotic equidistribution of zeros near the unit circle which come from Jentzsch and Szegő and were developed by Erdős and Turán later on. In addition, he obtains some new inequalities using potential theory.
