The letters in question were found by the authors in the \textsl{Nachlass} of Fricke, who was Felix Klein's student, then co-author and nephew-in-law. This article discusses the lives of Burnside and Fricke, their common interest in automorphic functions, and the letters, both of which are presented in full. A considerable amount of this correspondence consists of Burnside's musings on the question about finitely generated groups that he would address in a 1902 paper and which now bears his name.
