    The article deals with periodic points of triangular mappings \(F(x,y) = (f(x),g(x,y))\) from the square \(I^2 = [0,1] \times [0,1]\) into itself. The type (due to Sharkovsky) of \(F\) is an element of \({\mathbb Z}^+ \cup \{2^\infty\}\) such that the set of periods corresponding to periodic points of \(F\) is exactly the set \(\{s \in {\mathbb Z}^+: \;t \succeq s\}\); the order \(\succeq\) (Sharkovsky ordering) is defined by means of the relation: \[ 3 \succ 5 \succ 7 \succ \dots \succ 2 \cdot 3 \succ 2 \cdot 5 \succ 2 \cdot 7 \succ \dots \succ 4 \cdot 3 \succ 4 \cdot 5 \succ 4 \cdot 7 \succ \dots \succ \] \[ 2^n \cdot 3 \succ 2^n \cdot 5 \succ 2^n \cdot 7 \succ \dots \succ 2^\infty \succ \dots \succ 2^n \succ \dots \succ 4 \succ 2 \succ 1. \] The type exists for any continuous triangular mapping of \(I^2\) (the Sharkovsky theorem). The main result of the article (Theorem A): If \(F\) is a triangular map of type less than \(2^\infty\) then all points from \(I^2\) are asymptotically periodic for \(F\) provided that either \(F\) is analytic or \(F\) is continuous and each fibre \(\{x\} \times I\) contains finitely many periodic orbit of \(F\). In addition (Theorem B): there is \(C^\infty\) triangular map of type \(1\) having some nonasymptotically periodic point. At last (Proposition C), if \(F\) is \(C^1\) triangular map, then \(\text{Per} \, (F)\) is closed if and only if \(F\) has type less than \(2^\infty\).
