Non-uniform exponential trichotomies correspond to the existence of partial hyperbolic behavior in the dynamics. The idea of exponential trichotomy is a natural extension of exponential dichotomy. Linear dynamics will admit an exponential trichotomy if and only if two appropriate linear shifts admit exponential dichotomies. The authors' objective in this paper is to give a complete characterization of non-uniform exponential trichotomies. They consider non-autonomous linear dynamics in discrete time on finite-dimensional spaces. Three main problems are considered: (1) Complete characterization of non-uniform trichotomies in terms of strict Lyapunov sequences; (2) Explicit construction of strict Lyapunov sequences for a given exponential trichotomy; and (3) Corresponding results for cocycles over measure-preserving transformations. The explicit construction of strict Lyapunov sequences for a given non-uniform exponential trichotomy uses Lyapunov norms, which makes uniform the non-uniform behavior of the trichotomies.
