A sequence \((x_n)\) in an abelian locally compact group \(G\) is quasi-convex if the set \(S=\{0\} \cup\{\pm x_n:n\in \mathbb N\}\) is quasi-convex in \(G\), i.e. for every \(y\in G\setminus S\) there is \(\chi\) in the Pontryagin dual of \(G\) such that \(\chi(S) \subset \mathbb T_{+}\) and \(\chi(y) \notin \mathbb T_{+}\) (here \(\mathbb T_{+} = \pi([-\frac{1}{4},\frac{1}{4}])\), where \(\pi:\mathbb R\to\mathbb T\) is the natural projection). If \((x_n)\) converges to \(0\), then it is said to be a null sequence, and it is non-trivial if the set \(S\) is infinite. Working on a question of \textit{L. Aussenhofer} [Diss. Math. 384, 113 p. (1999; Zbl 0953.22001)] the authors find necessary and sufficient conditions under which a locally compact (or compact) abelian group contains no non-trivial quasi-convex null sequences. A consequence of this main result is that for every prime \(p\), the compact group \(\mathbb J_p\) of \(p\)-adic integers contains a non-trivial quasi-convex null sequence.
