Let \(G\) be a finitely generated group. One interesting problem is to study the asymptotic growth of the number of subgroups of finite index \(n\). In the article under review, the author introduces the notion of quantifying the extent to which a finitely generated group is residually finite. Among groups considered as examples in this article there are free groups, the first Grigorchuk group, finitely generated nilpotent groups and certain arithmetic groups such as \(\text{SL}_n(\mathbb Z)\). A new characterization of finitely generated nilpotent groups is also given.
