The authors study an iterative finite difference method for solving a class of two-dimensional coupled systems of nonlinear parabolic and hyperbolic equations. The system is first expanded by introducing an auxiliary variable, then discretized by a fully implicit scheme. At each time step, an iterative method with a linear constringent ratio is used. The updating is done in a timely manner when switching to the next equation. This updating procedure is tested to give better results without improving the convergence order. A strict theoretical analysis is carried out. Both the iterative scheme and the the nonlinear fully implicit finite difference (FIFD) scheme are second-order in space and first-order in time. The nonlinear FIFD scheme is proved to be stable. Numerical tests on two different meshes are presented. Finally, the authors indicate that they are working on methods with second-order temporal accuracy.
