The author presents an improvement of the fourth-order Newton-type method for solving a nonlinear equation. The new method has a convergence of order eight and requires four function evaluations per iteration step and therefore has efficiency index \(8^{\frac{1}{4}}\) which is better that all known Newton-type methods of lower order. The author makes numerical comparisons with several existing methods, including the lower order Newton-type methods but also the eight-order methods obtained by \textit{W. Bi} and \textit{Q. Wu, H. Ren} [ibid. 214, No.~1, 236--245 (2009; Zbl 1173.65030)]. These methods have the same efficiency index.
