The authors consider left invariant para-hypercomplex structures on four-dimensional Lie algebras, that means two endomorphisms \(J_1\) and \(J_2\), satisfying the properties \(J_1^2 = -1\), \(J_2^2 = 1\) and \(J_1 J_2 = - J_2 J_1\). Moreover, the structure must be integrable, a property expressed by the vanishing of some specific Nijenhuis tensors. In the first part of the paper, the authors find out which four-dimensional Lie algebras admit a para-hypercomplex structure and compare their result with the classification of four-dimensional Lie algebras admitting hypercomplex structures [\textit{M. I. Barberis}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 128, No.~4, 1043--1054 (1997; Zbl 0882.53047)]. Next, the equivalence classes of para-hypercomplex structures are determined. Finally, the authors associate a canonical metric of signature (2,2) and study conformal classes, different kinds of curvature properties and holonomy algebras. All the previous properties are synthetized into an interesting classification table with 29 entries.
