The author proves some properties of the topological degree of a mapping on a compact real algebraic set and recalls definitions and facts concerning the intersection number of an immersion. The author then defines the intersection number for continuous mappings \(g\) on compact manifolds and on compact real algebraic sets. In both cases it is assumed that the diagonal is isolated in \(\{(x, y)~|~g(x) = g(y)\}\). Finally, the author provides computations of the intersection number in the latter case, particularly, when \(g\) is a polynomial mapping.
