The (local) Milnor monodromy zeta function \(\xi_f(t) \in {\mathbb C}(t)^*\) at \(0 \in {\mathbb C}^n\) of a polynomial over \({\mathbb C}\) in \(n\) indeterminates such that \(f(0)=0\) was expressed by Varchenko using the geometry of the Newton polygon of \(f\). To prove this, he constructed a toric modification of \({\mathbb C}^n\) on which the pull-back of \(f\) defines a hypersurface with only normal crossing singularities. Taking into account that \({\mathbb C}^n\) is a toric variety, the authors generalize that formula to Milnor fibers over singular toric varieties, and this is done by using sheaf-theoretical methods as nearby cycles and constructible sheaves. The methods here described are applied by the authors, in other papers, to related problems as to compute the monodromy of zeta functions at infinity or to provide some applications to \(A\)-discriminant varieties.
