The problem of finding a lower bound for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue \(\lambda_1\) of the Laplacian has been studied in many contexts. In [J.\ Math.\ Physics 39, 182--188 (1960; Zbl 0099.18701)], \textit{L. E. Payne} and \textit{H. F. Weinberger} investigated the problem in the setting of certain wedge-shaped membranes and proved a lower bound for sectors. The paper under review generalizes this work from two dimensions to general dimension, giving a lower bound on \(\lambda_1\) for a bounded domain in a cone; the bound is realized only for sectors. To prove the bound, the author develops a weighted isoperimetric inequality for bounded domains in a cone and uses this inequality to estimate the Rayleigh quotient.
