The author studies Riemannian manifolds with exceptional holonomy groups by using the notion of multi-moment map, recently introduced in a paper with \textit{A. Swann} [``Multi-moment maps'', \url{arXiv:1012.2048}]. Such maps exist on manifolds \(M\) with closed three-form \(c\) and Lie groups \(G\) that act on \(M\) preserving \(c\). (They call \((M,c)\) a strong geometry and \(G\) a group of symmetries.) The author emphasizes that such manifolds are related to vacuum solutions of the Einstein equation and to some problems in supergravity. In particular, manifolds with holonomy contained in Spin(7) are considered, preserved by a three-torus symmetry. Relations with previous works by V. Apostolov and S. Salomon, M. Berger, R. L. Bryant, N. Hitchin and S. K. Donaldson are stressed, too. The paper, after a concise introduction, splits into three more sections: 2. Reduction via multi-moment maps; 3. Inversion via a flow; 4. Examples.
