A quasi-polarised manifold is a pair \((X, L)\) where \(X\) is a projective manifold and \(L\) a nef and big line bundle on \(X\). The sectional genus is defined by the formula \[ g(X, L) = 1+ \frac{1}{2} (K_X+(n-1)L) \cdot L^{n-1} \] where \(n=\dim X\). If \(L\) is globally generated, the sectional genus equals the genus of a curve cut out by \(n-1\) general sections of \(L\). A conjecture of Fujita claims that the sectional genus always satisfies the inequality \(g(X, L) \geq q(X)\) where \(q(X)\) is the irregularity. This conjecture is open in general but has been proven by the author for threefolds if \(h^0(X, L) \geq 2\) [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 351, No.1, 363--377 (1999; Zbl 0905.14003)]. In the paper under review the author considers quasi-polarised threefolds \((X, L)\) such that \(h^0(X, L) \geq 3\) and \(g(X, L)=q(X)\). He proves that in this situation the \(\Delta\)-genus is zero or \((X, L)\) is birational to a scroll over a curve.
