This paper defines and studies the character map in the context of deformation quantization. Let us recall that the third author generalized for cyclic chains the \(L_\infty\) morphism from Hochschild chains of smooth functions to differential forms. This implies the existence of a map, called character map by the authors, which is in fact an isomorphism from the periodic cyclic homology of a formal associative deformation of the algebra of functions to de Rham cohomology. In this work, the authors study the dependence of the character map on the Poisson bivector field. After recalling some of the main notions, the authors give a description of the character map. Then they prove that this map is compatible with the Gauss-Manin connection. They extend a result of Calaque and Rossi on the compatibility with the cap product. In the case of regular Poisson manifolds, the authors give a easier proof of the result. Finally, the authors consider the general case of a Poisson manifold and obtain a new proof of the Tamarkin-Tsygan index theorem.
