Following \textit{A. L. Shields} and \textit{D. L. Williams} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 162(1971), 287--302 (1972; Zbl 0227.46034)], a positive function \(\psi\) defined on \([1,\infty)\) is said to be normal if there exist positive constants \(\alpha\) and \(\beta\) such that \(\psi(t)/t^\alpha\) is non-decreasing and \(\psi(t)/t^\beta\) is non-increasing on \([1,\infty)\). The importance of these functions stems from the fact that the most typical weights in classical spaces of analytic functions of Hardy or Bergman type are given by normal functions of the variable \((1-|z|^2)^{-1}\). Given a normal function \(\psi\), it is also natural to consider the weighted Hardy-type space \(H^\infty_\psi\) of all functions \(f\) analytic in the unit disk for which \[ |f(z)| = O \left( \psi ((1-|z|)^{-1}) \right) , \quad 0\leq |z|< 1 . \] In relation to this space, the author proves that if \(\psi \) is a normal function on \([1,\infty)\) and \(f\) is an analytic function in the disk given by a lacunary series \({f(z)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n z^{k_n}}\) (\(|z| < 1\)), then \[ \frac 1C \sup_{n\geq 0} \frac{|a_n|}{\psi(k_n)} \leq \sup_{0 < r < 1} \frac{|f(r\zeta)|}{\psi(1/(1-r))} \leq C\sup_{n\geq 0} \frac{|a_n|}{\psi(k_n)}, \quad |\zeta|=1, \] where \(C\) is a constant independent of \(\zeta \) and \(\{a_{n}\}\). (Actually, a little more general result is proved in the paper under review.) This improves a recent result of \textit{C. Yang} and \textit{W. Xu} [Arch. Math. 96, No. 2, 151--160 (2011; Zbl 1220.30003)] and yields as a corollary their theorem on the Taylor coefficients of functions in \(H^\infty_\psi\). The proof is relatively ``elementary'' and relies on inequalities for polynomials and estimates for normal weights and lacunary series.
