The author investigates \(2\)-blocks \(B\) with a minimal nonabelian defect group \(D\). Thus \(D\) is nonabelian, but all proper subgroups of \(D\) are Abelian. The various possibilities for \(D\) are known by a result of Rédei. If \(D\) is metacyclic then the structure of \(B\) is known by earlier results; so the author concentrates on the remaining cases. If \(B\) is nilpotent then the structure of \(B\) follows from a result of Puig. Therefore the author considers only the nonnilpotent case. Then two families of defect groups remain, each parametrized by a positive integer \(r\). For one of these two families, the author determines the numerical invariants \(k(B)\), \(l(B)\), \(k_i(B)\) (\(i\geq 0\)) of the corresponding blocks \(B\). Moreover, he verifies the conjectures of Alperin and Dade for these blocks and shows that the gluing problem has a unique solution. For the other family of defect groups, the author proves inequalities for the numerical invariants \(k(B)\), \(l(B)\), \(k_i(B)\) (\(i\geq 0\)). In this case he is able to verify conjectures of Brauer and Olsson concerning the numbers \(k(B)\) and \(k_0(B)\). Reviewer's remark: Recently, the author, C. Eaton and the reviewer completed the work on the second family of defect groups, by making use of the classification of the finite simple groups.
