A Hardy inequality of the form \[ \int\limits_\Omega\left|\nabla f(x)\right|^p dx\geq c(n,p,\Omega)\int\limits_\Omega\{1+a(\delta,\partial\Omega)(x)\}\frac{|f(x)|^p} {\delta(x)^p} \] is studied, where \(\Omega\subset \mathbb R^n, n\geq 2\), is the domain \(f\in C_0^{\infty}(\Omega\setminus \mathcal{R}(\Omega)),\) \(p\in(1,\infty),\) \(\mathcal{R}(\Omega)\) is the ridge of \(\Omega\), and \(\delta(x)\) is the distance from \(x\) to the boundary \(\partial\Omega\) of \(\Omega\). The function \(a(\delta,\partial\Omega)\) depends on \(\delta\) and the geometric properties of the boundary of \(\Omega\). Domains which are either convex or have convex complements are of particular interest. In these cases \(a(\delta,\partial\Omega)\) is explicitly determined in terms of \(\delta\) and the principal curvatures of \(\partial\Omega\). For example, if \(\Omega\) is a convex domain with \(C^2\) boundary (with an additional condition on the regularity of the ridge of \(\Omega\), \(p = n = 2,\) then \[ a(\delta,\partial\Omega)(x)=\left|\frac{2\kappa\delta}{1+\kappa\delta}(x)\right| \] where \(\kappa\) is the curvature of \(\partial\Omega.\) A Hardy inequality is also established for any doubly connected domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb R^2\) in terms of a uniformization of \(\Omega\).
