This paper presents an analytical method based on the Laplace transform and series solution to study the dynamic behavior of thermoelastic stresses in a finite-length functionally graded (FG) thick hollow cylinder under thermal shock loading (transient thermal boundary conditions with high-rate variation in the time domain). The cylinder is considered with simply supported ends and traction-free on its bounding surfaces. The thermo-mechanical properties of the FG cylinder are assumed to be temperature-independent and vary continuously and smoothly through the radial direction as a nonlinear power function in terms of volume fraction. Using the Laplace transform and series solution, the thermoelastic Navier equations in displacement form are solved analytically. The solution of the displacement field in the FG cylinder is obtained in the Laplace domain. To study the time history of two-dimensional thermoelastic stresses, the stress field in the cylinder is obtained in the time domain with the use of the fast Laplace inverse transform method. Using the presented method, the governing equations of motion with inertia terms can be solved employing all mathematical grading models for thermo-mechanical properties. The effects of thermal shock loading on the dynamic characteristics of the FG thick hollow cylinder are studied at various points across the thickness of the cylinder for various grading patterns of FGMs. The comparison of the results obtained by the presented analytical method with published data shows good agreement.
