The paper presents a study of two boundary value problems proposed in [\textit{A. Ishak}, \textit{R. Nazar} and \textit{I. Pop}, ``Heat transfer over an unsteady stretching surface with prescribed heat flux'', Can. J. Phys. 86, No. 6, 853--855 (2008; \url{doi:10.1139/p08-005}); Nonlinear Anal., Real World Appl. 10, No. 5, 2909--2913 (2009; Zbl 1162.76017)] to investigate the laminar boundary flow over a stretching surface of a viscous incompressible fluid. The described cases cover two situations, assuming a permeable surface with prescribed temperature in the first one and an impermeable surface with prescribed heat flux in the other. Following [loc. cit.], the equation governing the stream function is reduced to the boundary value problem \[ f'''+\left(f-\frac{A\eta}{2}\right)f''-\left(A+f'\right)f'=0,\quad 0<\eta<+\infty, \] subject to \[ f(0)=f_0,\;f'(0)=1 \text{ and } f'(+\infty)=0. \] The corresponding BVPs describing the temperature are of the form \[ \begin{aligned}\frac{1}{\mathrm{Pr}}\theta''+\left(f-\frac{A\eta}{2}\right)\theta'-\left(A+f'\right)\theta&=0,\\ \theta(0)=1,\;\theta(\infty)&=0,\end{aligned} \] in the case of a permeable surface with prescribed temperature, and \[ \begin{aligned}\frac{1}{\mathrm{Pr}}\theta''+\left(f-\frac{A\eta}{2}\right)\theta'-\left(\frac{A}{2}+f'\right)\theta&=0,\\ \theta'(0)=-1,\;\theta(\infty)&=0\end{aligned} \] when an impermeable surface with prescribed heat flux is considered. Here, \(\mathrm{Pr}\) denotes the Prandtl number and \(A\) is a parameter measuring the unsteadiness. The main results refer to the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the above problems. They are mainly obtained by applying the topological shooting technique. In addition, bounds on two physical quantities, namely the skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number, are deduced analytically.
