Let \(\mathbb C H^n\) be the \(n\)-dimensional complex hyperbolic space, let \(\mathcal O\) be the ring of integers of some number field \(\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)\) with \(D < 0\) and let \(\Lambda \simeq \mathcal O^{n+1}\) be an integral \(\mathcal O\)-lattice with signature \((n,1)\). If \(U(\Lambda)\) is the group of automorphisms of \(\Lambda\), then \(\mathbb C H^n\) is a homogeneous space for the complexified group \(U(\Lambda)_{\mathbb C}\). Given an arithmetic subgroup \(\Gamma \subset U(\Lambda)\), the aim of the paper is the study of the singularities of the ball quotient \(\Gamma \backslash \mathbb C H^n\) and of its unique toroidal compactification \((\Gamma \backslash \mathbb C H^n)^*\). In the main theorem of the paper, the author shows that \(\Gamma \backslash \mathbb C H^n\) has at most canonical singularities provided that \(n \geq 12\) and \(D < -3\), whereas \((\Gamma \backslash \mathbb C H^n)^*\) has at most canonical singularities provided that \(n \geq 13\) and \(D < -3\).
